The Golden Ratio

Posted by
Hoshisato (Dippach, Luxembourg) on 16 May 2009 in Abstract & Conceptual and Portfolio.

Taken from the bottom of the same stairs I photographed in this photo from above. I'm quite happy with the way both shots came out: the light was poor and in both cases I had to use an open aperture of f/3.5 to reach an exposure, handheld, of 1/8 and 1/4 seconds respectively.
If any other Pentax K20D users are reading this, the new 1.03 firmware really does improve the functionality of the already amazing shake reduction extensively, I would recommend upgrading if you haven't already.

The fun thing of this photo for me is that it matches the swirly composition guide (the Golden Ratio) as included in LightRoom almost perfectly :-)

You are shooting digital now, but deep down, maybe even unbeknown to you, you want to try film and find out why so many happy people are still using it. If so, once you are ready to take the next step to being a happy photographer, visit my page dedicated to film photography here.

GJC from Kyoto (京都), Japan

I like both, and this one is especially good because the light really accentuates the composition. Very good work in difficult situation.

@GJC: Thanks; I wasn't expecting much and didn't want to spend too long looking up a stairs people were using, but all in all, I'm rally happy with the results.

Ana Lúcia from Leiria, Portugal

Sensational image. The lighting, lines and perspective are incredible.

16 May 2009 5:21am

@Ana Lúcia: It all came very well together, but the lines are perspective are really due to the "distortion" of the 10mm focal length I used.

Jonathan Palfrey from Spain

Good composition and remarkably unblurred at that speed.

@Jonathan Palfrey: Cheers!

This foto definately is great art. The title tells the secret of it. But it is also amazing to see the perfect tones an shades.
Deeply impressed,

@lux: Yeah, I was amazed how well the result of the fisheye lens all of a sudden fitted the golden ratio :-)

Sugata from Newark, United States

This is amazing work! By the way, I am planning to buy a K20D later this year. It seems to be a very good camera, isn't it? I have a 28 year old Pentax MX 35mm SLR (actually my father's) and so I am a bit biased towards Pentax.

16 May 2009 7:27pm

@Sugata: My first camera was a Pentax ME and I am also biased towards Pentax, but I think everybody will agree that the Pentax K20D (and the similar Samsung GX-20) are really great cameras at a decent price. I love my K20D and moved up from a Pentax *ist DS.
