Japanese homestead

Posted by Hoshisato (Ealing, United Kingdom) on 7 August 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

The homestead of my wife's family in Iwate, Japan. The house behind the walls is about 270 years old and is very distinctive from the others in the village. The house has stables, a tiny Shinto shrine in the garden, an orchard and used to have a thatched roof. The family was clearly grand once, now there is only the house left. I expected a treasure trove of antique furniture inside, but "kind" people had already stopped by and offered to pick up any "old junk" for free or offered a small sum.
