Tawarayama Onsen - shokudō dinerPosted by Hoshisato (Ealing, United Kingdom) on 22 February 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. We took the bus from Nagato to arrive in Tawarayama Onsen which had been the main target for us this trip. It is a virtually unknown onsen town, a backwater literally, with great baths and nice ryokan. I had the feeling that not many foreigners had preceded me here as people would stop to look and an old man almost fell off the roof trying to catch a glimpse of us. The building in the photo above is a shokudō diner, offering cheap, home-made food and can often be found in the Japanese countryside. Did you watch the film Kamome shokudo? Same type of restaurant. Personally I love this photo as it tells me so much about the Japanese countryside, so very different from the big towns most tourists only get to know.
