Mount Fuji in December

I recently picked up Meeting with Japan (1959) and Hekura: The diving girls' island (1962) both by Fosco Maraini for a few pounds. I had come across a fabulous photo book of his work and wanted to see more of his photos. I was happily surprised to find that his books are simply fascinating: the Japan he described is almost gone and you only have a chance to glimpse it when visiting the remote areas on the coast of the Sea of Japan side.

Fosco Maraini spent two years in an internment camp in Nagoya during the war and part of Meeting with Japan contains a description of him visiting Tokyo immediately after his liberation and only four days after the first American GIs arrived there. I can only recommend these books!
