Ganguro girls in Shinjuku

Posted by Hoshisato (Ealing, United Kingdom) on 9 August 2008 in People & Portrait and Portfolio.

I took this picture in about 10 years ago on one of those Sundays when Shinjuku is closed off for traffic. The girls in the photo are 'Ganguro' or kogal maybe: A deep tan, bleached or dyed hair, false eyelashes, dark make-up, platform shoes, Louis Vuitton bags and brightly-coloured outfits complete the look.
After I took this photo, a kid walked up to me and told me that I shouldn't pay any attention to these girls: "These are not Japanese girls!" He exclaimed. A bit scary, but he turned all smiles when I asked him to pose for a photo.

All in all it is a pretty terrible photo but it got a load of hits on Flickr.com so I reckoned it might be worth sharing here and invite your comments. ;-)

Thanks for all your comments, please keep them coming. You will do me a great favour by visiting my black and white gallery or blog. For my trip reports, please visit my Travel Blog page.

I'll be in NL for the holidays if I can make it through the forecast snowstorms, see you in 2010! Update: I've not been able to reach Dover for two days in a row now, P&O ferries are not able to take any calls, I have no idea when I'll manage to make it to NL ^_^;;
