Akebono unagi restaurant in Sendai

One of the great things of having a father-in-law who lived years in the town you are visiting is that he can point you to the great little restaurants in the area. For example, the best broiled eel (unagi) in Sendai is served in Akebono's restaurant, a tiny restaurant hidden away in a maze of tiny streets behind a large shopping street and is mostly visited by older salarymen. The restaurant might be a bit smoky and dirty, the unagi is delicious and the best you'll ever eat, I'd dare say. The restaurant has been in the family for about 140 years and the master and his mother were kind enough to pose for a photo.

Another recommended place in Sendai is the Tanuki yakitori restaurant in the Sendai station area in a basement. No photo of that restaurant, unfortunately.
